landing party ( for thecanarylives )
[ He comes to with his head pounding, his vision blurred, and a persistent ringing in his ears. It takes him a while-- a good while, maybe seconds or maybe minutes, to even regain his vision properly, and to take in his surroundings. He's in a shuttle, which is completely wrecked, panels broken and burnt, wires hanging from everywhere, sparks going off and small fires here or there. They're also tilted forward slightly, so he can feel his weight pushing against the belts keeping him strapped to his chair. He looks beyond the window and he sees a lush forest just outside, trees and blue skies as far as the eye can see. It'd be pretty if not for the fact that they've clearly crashed on the planet they were supposed to land on.
Shit. Holy shit, they crashed. How the fuck did they crash? Leonard just wanted to gather some samples from the surface, it didn't even warrant a landing party bigger than two people, how the fuck did they end up like this?
That thought gets his brain into gear. Because he's not alone. He looks over to find Sara passed out, though at least thankfully still strapped to her seat. He lets out a shuddered breath, trying not to panic as he struggles to undo his own safety belt. ]
Sara!! Come on, you piece of shi-- [ His panicked grousing is cut off as his belt comes undone, and he just barely manages to brace himself against the controls rather than slam right into them. Head still spinning, he nevertheless forces himself to stumble towards her, looking her over briefly for possible injuries before he cups her face, trying to wake her up. ] Sara. Hey, can you hear me? Come on, open your eyes...

Hey, can you hear me? Come on, open your eyes...

One would think that Leonard doesn't do well with stressful situations, but here's the thing: he's a doctor, he's been dealing with stress since residency, since even before then. He may grouse and yell and complain but he damn well can handle stress, probably better than just about anyone on the Enterprise, despite appearances. ]
Well, at least you can still recognize my handsome face, [ He jokes, already taking her vitals, listening to her breathing. He reaches down to pinch her legs, and her hands. Just making sure there's no damage to her spine he'll somehow make worse. ]
Can you feel that? Talk to me, Sara. Need you to tell me so I can get you out of this chair, alright?
no subject
Wrinkling her nose, she shifts both legs in response to his touch, then her arms. ]
I'm fine. Quit pinching me.
[ She reaches a hand out to steady herself on his shoulder, though, gripping it tightly before unbuckling the fastener on her belt. She lurches forward with the pull of gravity, stumbling into his arms a moment before managing to find her footing. ]
Ah, shit- [ She uses another hand to steady herself again the wall, hitting her Starfleet badge and frowning at its silence. ] Lance to Enterprise, come in. [ Nothing. ] Lance to Enterprise- shit.
no subject
He lets out a huffed groan when she lands on him, but he offers her the support she needs, not even a little bit surprised that she doesn't manage to connect with the ship. Of course she wouldn't. ]
The shuttle's lost. Come on, Sara, we have to get out of here.
no subject
There's a survival pack underneath your chair. Grab it. M'right behind you.
[ She stoops to unhitch her own pack from under her seat, hissing at the sharp sting that works its way from her shoulder blade down the length of her arm. Gonna need to deal with that later. And the blurred vision. And the nausea. That's probably a bad sign.
Gritting her teeth, she gathers a black case of weapons from a compartment next to her seat before quickly following him towards the exit. ]
no subject
[ He's already moving the moment he sees that she can move. As bad as it is for her to be moving around right now, they really have no other choice. They need to get out of the shuttle before it either tips over, or it blows up for whatever reason.
He yanks the pack from underneath his seat, bringing his own medkit along as well. No way he's going anywhere without that. Both in hand, he rushes towards the exit, making sure Sara's following right after as he leaps out of the shuttle, stumbling onto the ground with a somewhat ungraceful grunt. ]
no subject
Just in time, too. With both their weight lifted from the vessel, there's a large groan of machinery and the thing rolls - groaning on its way over the ledge and down into a chasm.
She grimaces as the sound echoes through the trees, adjusting the pack on her good shoulder and turning towards him. ]
W'gotta go. Before any locals come running.
no subject
Sara doesn't need to tell him twice; he's already nodding and walking, bag shouldered while the medkit's tight on his hand. He has a phaser strapped to his thigh but he's not really planning on reaching for it unless he absolutely has to.
The forest is thick, which is good because it provides them with some cover. It's also bad because they won't be able to see too ahead of time if any locals are coming their way. Still, for now they have to move fast, until they find some kind of shelter.
He's sure that's what she's thinking too, but she might not be able to even stay upright for long, let alone be able to find a cave or something, so he keeps his eyes peeled for any little corner they can hide in. ]
no subject
If she was dizzy before, it's only getting worse now. The double vision echoes in her brain and she has to blink constantly to get herself to focus in. The best she can do in their defense - besides not hurl the contents of her stomach into the nearest tree - is listen. Their footsteps are loud with the crunch of leaves beneath them, but it's inevitable at the pace they're trying to set. More important is to put distance between themselves and the wreckage.
She's not sure how long they walk for. It feels like ages, but it can't be more than a mile or two. Eventually she spots a small cave tucked into the side of another ledge. ]
Here. [ Her voice is shallow, tight as she leads him to it, digging into her pack for a flashlight and a blaster. If the thing's already occupied, they'll need to be quick. ]
no subject
Luckily, the biggest thing to rush out is a fairly large rodent, though it looks more scared than confrontational. It scurries off and disappears into the woods, and the cave is small enough that a quick look around reveals that it's otherwise empty.
It'll do. For a couple days if need be-- in the meantime, hopefully the crew's working on coming down here and saving their asses. ]
Alright. Let's have a look at your injuries.
[ He sets down the med kit and lets the bag slide off his shoulders, already pulling out the blanket and stretching it out across the floor. ]
Have a seat.
no subject
She ducks her head and follows McCoy inside, scanning the area carefully - as carefully as she can, considering the dizziness is only getting worse.
She claims a seat on the blanket he lays out, setting her bags down and groping around for the water bottle. Her skin is pale and clammy, and when he inspects her further he'll very quickly find out why. There's a large gash running from the top of her shoulder blade down towards her side, the blood thick and soaked through her uniform. ]
Your med kit comes with a bottle of whiskey, right?
no subject
No. And don't drink water yet, let me do a scan first. Drinkin' water may do more harm than good.
[ He'll just have to figure out how to hydrate her if he can't heal whatever is wrong with her. For now he grabs his tricorder to get some readings, more or less satisfied with what he gets, all things considered. Before he goes for the diagnostic wrap, he first shifts closer so he can look her over, feeling first along her nape, tracing the spine over her clothes. ]
I'm gonna need to get your shirt off. Think we can get it off or should I cut it?
[ It's all said very bluntly and practically, he's definitely not playing here. She doesn't look too gravely wounded, but he won't risk it, not when they might be stuck here for a while. ]
no subject
Fine. Not like I'm suffering blood loss or just hiked through a forest or anything.
[ She stays still as he scans her, skin still clammy with cold sweat as his fingertips skin her bones. ]
Just cut it. S'ruined anyway.
[ Her voice is tight, irritated at her current state. She's not much use as a bodyguard concussed and with a gaping hole in her shoulder. She helps him peel the fabric of her shirt away from her skin, leaving it in a pile on the floor. ]
You hurt at all?
no subject
[ She's pretty good as a patient right now, at least. She doesn't struggle or move, nor does she try to insist that she's fine and it's just a scratch. Jim would probably be fighting him and trying to get up at this point, so her attitude is very much appreciated. ]
I don't think so. A few scratches, and I think I hit my head, but it just hurts when I touch it. It's probably just a bump. I'll check it out after I'm done with you.
[ He's not going to risk dying from internal bleeding, obviously, but she's in a worse state than he is, anyway. With her shredded shirt out of the way, it's easier for him to take in the damage, and after a visual examination puts some of his worries to rest, he reaches for the diagnostic wrap, pulling it open and slowly moving it over her from head to toe. It's quick to bring out areas of greater damage, which he promptly reads out to her. ]
Dislocated shoulder, mild concussion... the injuries you're bleeding from aren't too severe. You have a cracked rib but it's nothing too serious, you just have to make sure not to move too much. No internal bleeding, either.
[ He puts the wrap away, going through the rest of his tools and supplies. ]
You'll be right as rain as soon as I get you to sickbay, but for now let's stop that bleeding and patch you up. You'll need to eat something too, and drink just a bit of water. Sound good?
no subject
[ She shoots him a wry, if not tired smile, reaching her good arm out to prop herself up as he does whatever tests he needs to do. Through her muddled vision, she watches him move, just to make sure he's not unknowingly bleeding somewhere he should know about. Seems like her side of the ship took the brunt of the damage, which is fine by her. ]
Dammit. Cracked ribs take forever to heal. [ She grumbles, nodding at the rest of his words and shifting so she can lean her back against the stone wall of the cave. Tugging her pack towards her, she rummages through for her communicator. ]
Everything's fried. Some kind of interference in the atmosphere. Which means it'll be hell trying to get a signal back to the ship.
no subject
Quit whinin'. Two sessions on the table and I'll get it healed for you.
[ But yeah until they make it to the ship, she'll have to bear it. He lets her fiddle with the comm device while he starts tending to the wound on her forehead, at least she's distracted and it's a chance they'll find a way back. But he doesn't hold his breath on that one. ]
They'll come for us. Jim's gonna find a way to get down here, or get the genius kid to work around the interference and beam us up. We just gotta make sure to sit still in the meantime. And stay alive, obviously.
no subject
[ She quirks a small, teasing smile at him. Truth is, she's used to handling injuries a hell of a lot worse than this one with little to nothing in the way of medical equipment. She barely flinches as he tends to her wounds, even with the sting of antiseptic and jostle of her ribs as she gives him room to work.
Wrinkling her nose at the dead comm link in her hands, she tosses it back into her bag. ]
That's what I'm afraid of. Captain decides to come down here, he'll end up crash landing just like we did. We should try and get to higher ground tomorrow. See if that helps any.
[ She rests her head back on the wall as he cleans the cut on her forehead, which is already swollen and bruised. ]
Sure you're not hoarding any liquor in that med pack?
no subject
[ And he'd much rather do two sessions and make sure no lingering damage was left behind, especially considering how physically active she is. Wouldn't do to risk her making it even worse by putting too much pressure on a not entirely healed bone. ]
He won't. He's not stupid. They'll know something's goin' on here, something that's affecting our communications. Let's just... wait. [ He nods. ] But yes, we can look for higher ground. Tomorrow. Once I've patched you up and healed what I can. Don't want you walkin' around before then, alright?
[ He keeps working all the while, checking each injury thoroughly before cleaning it up, wiping away excess blood and dirt and sweat, moving on to the next. He'll leave bandaging and binding for last. ]
Only alcohol I have is 96%, and you can't actually drink it. Sorry to disappoint you.
no subject
[ Goading him? Maybe a little. But it helps take her mind off the fact that this mission is going to be a hell of a lot more difficult with a sprained rib and a mild concussion. Still, at the very least, all they need to worry about for the immediate future is getting a good night's rest. ]
Yeah, yeah. I'll stay put, long as you do. [ She does pull a small holo-device from her pack, though. Scanning a copy of the rocky wall in front of them before projecting it to the mouth of the cave's entrance. It should keep anyone or anything wandering by away, at least for the night.
His touch is light and careful, even if the pain has subsided at least a bit now that she's able to rest. Reclaiming the water bottle, she takes a few slow sips, quirking a small smile. ]
Sounds like a challenge to me.
no subject
[ He huffs a snort, shaking his head as he treats her injuries carefully. Some of the tools with him allow him to stop the bleeding on her open wounds, and next he covers them with protective gauze, before wrapping her up with strong bandages. He has plenty to last them at least a week, in a worst case scenario. Hopefully it won't get any worse than that. ]
Don't confuse me with our dearest Captain, you bet your ass I'm not plannin' on going anywhere. I'm not some goddamn space cowboy gallivanting through the galaxy.
[ And he's absolutely not going anywhere without her, not unless he absolutely has to. For now, he finishes wrapping up her injuries, then he moves to cut off her dirty, bloodied undershirt, fetching a clean one from the survival kit. It's thicker and has longer sleeves, which will help with conserving her body heat. ]
Alright, this might hurt a little, but you have to put this one on. Let's go slow and make sure we don't make any of your injuries worse, alright? And no playin' hero-- if the pain's anywhere above a five in your scale, you tell me. Got it?
[ He knows she has a higher threshold for pain, so a five would be fairly serious in her case. He pushes the thick sweater down her head first, then he takes her uninjured arm first, calmly guiding it through the respective sleeve. ]
no subject
Hey now, you're the one who insisted on personally pulling samples from the surface, remember? Which, by the way, you should probably do at some point. I'm only crash landing on this planet for you once.
[ She cocks a brow at thick, over-sized sweater he offers her, narrowing her eyes at it and straightening to help him get it over her head. ]
And here I thought you just wanted to cut my shirt off for the view. [ She worms her way through the fabric, maneuvering her head through the opening, then her good arm through the sleeve. She doesn't wince or flinch even as she moves her wrapped arm through the other sleeve, flexing her shoulder just a bit to work out a bit of soreness there. ]
no subject
[ He sure as hell won't want to try again. But for now it's probably not a good idea to be leaving the relative safety of the cave, not until at least he's sure that there aren't any natives nearby. That means sitting still, no loud noises and nothing that may call attention to them, such as building a fire, for instance.
Luckily the sun is still up and it's not too cold yet. ]
Sorry, darlin'. But you're not much of a view when you're all banged up like this.
[ He tosses the playful jab at her with a crooked little smile. Not that he means to flirt, because it sounds like a terrible idea given their brief history, but it seems to keep her distracted, so. ]
There. Now-- we've got some more blankets in here. You should try not to fall asleep for the next few hours, just in case, but we should at least make you comfortable. [ He uses one of them to fashion her a makeshift pillow, setting it down on top of the blanket she's sitting on. ]
no subject
[ She quirks a small smile, thinking back to the many, many trainwreck away missions she and the Captain have already racked up. Many of which might've been just a little bit fudged in the final log.
She wrinkles her nose when he jabs at her, though, pulling a frown. ]
Only 'cause you stuck me in an old lady sweater. Jerk.
[ She chuckles, though, sucking in a slow breath to test the pressure of the wrap he's bound around her ribs. Not horribly uncomfortable, all things considered. She settles back against the wall again, waving a hand to dismiss the pillow. ]
I'm plenty comfortable, now will you clean your own scrapes up already? You're an eyesore, all dirty and bloody like that.
no subject
[ Unpleasant though it is to crash on a planet, he's treated her for much worse injuries after away missions, and Jim as well. So yeah, he is well aware of the crazy dangers she usually gets herself into during those missions. ]
Maybe old lady sweaters just do it for me, you don't know.
[ He dismisses the playful insult, shrugging. His eyes roll as she all but orders him to clean himself up, groaning and waving a hand at her. ]
Yeah, yeah, I'm gettin' to it. Give it a rest.
[ Look at him, fetching gauze and antiseptic for himself, cleaning away the dirt and blood from the few scrapes and cuts he's gotten. Nothing he really needs to be worrying about, and he doesn't even bother with bandaging anything, grabbing his dermal regenerator to slowly fix the more superficial wounds that don't need any further treatment. ]
no subject
[ She grins. Sure, she'd been assigned to the Enterprise for less time, but that didn't mean she'd racked up less injuries since she'd joined up.
Cocking a brow at him, she chuckles and lets her head rest back against the stone wall. ]
S'that why you broke it off, Doc? I don't own enough grandma sweaters?
[ Her eyes droop a little and she wills herself to shake off the drowsiness, sitting up and casting her gaze around the dimly lit cave. Eventually, her eyes focus on him, a frowning tugging at her lips as the blurry, doubled vision gives him a strange, slow motion kind of effect.
Well, if there's no alcohol available, at least the concussion is entertainment enough for the time being. ]
no subject
[ Not that it's a competition or anything. Although at the rate they both get themselves into trouble, he does wonder if they realize that. Sure is a good source of headaches for the doctor.
He freezes a little at her next words, eyes flickering to her, only to see the way she struggles to keep her eyes open. He sets the regenerator aside, moving over to her side, bringing the kit closer so he can scan her head again, more thoroughly this time. ]
Hey, Sara. Talk to me, come on. Don't you pass out on me, alright?
